This is BIG landscape, perhaps
a half- mile in extent. Great clouds
are coming over the mountains that
circle the artist’s home,to confront
the dawn. The landscape vibrates in
the chill morning light. The crescent
moon fades. Trees cover the other side
of the canyon in a pointilism of snow
patches, clay, and dashes of shadow.
The view is alive with incident, if you
look for it, including the painter and
his dog Ruffles,flushing out a pair of
jays on the far right. This painting
invites you to breathe deeply, and
visually walk along with the artist and
his dog, into the alternate world of a
painting. Some art can do this.
